At some point in their careers, bankers who want to develop their lending ability recognize a need to acquire or improve their Financial Statement Analysis skills.

Unfortunately, too often the fundamentals of these critical skills are learned on the job in an uncoordinated and inconsistent manner.   The result can be that financial statements continue to look to the analyst like a confusing mass of numbers.

In this Seminar, the following basic financial statement analysis areas will be covered in a cohesive and focused manner: 

  • The balance sheet equation
  • Understanding the format and structure of the balance sheet
  • Understanding the Account Titles
  • Structure of the income statement
  • Relationship between the balance sheet and the income statement
  • What to look for in the typical financial statement
  • Potential signs of financial problems
  • Brief Introduction to ratios and cash flow

The course is taught with a unique approach that avoids focusing on numbers.  It is designed to build skills quickly and provide a sound basis for financial statement analysis.

  • Only by proper evaluation can a lender indentify  financial strengths and weakness
  • Determining borrowing purpose is a function of financial statement analysis
  • Understanding the true meaning of financial ratios and what they don’t tell you
  • Introduction to cash flow methods and what works
  • What is the structure of financial statements and why
  • What are the key items to look at on the balance sheet and P&L
  • Quality of financial informationKey issues related to asset quality
  • Understanding the liability section of the balance sheet
  • Using financial statements to identify borrowing purpose
  • Effectively using ratios and cash flow
  • How debt service coverage ratio can greatly mislead you
  • Identifying financial strengths and weakness

Previously Gary was a District Bank President with thirty years experience in commercial lending, credit analysis, loan and credit administration, loan workouts and bank management.  Currently he is on the Board of  Directors of a Community Bank.
