About RMA

Founded in 1914, The Risk Management Association (RMA) is a not-for-profit, member-driven professional association whose sole purpose is to advance the use of sound risk principles in the financial services industry. RMA promotes an enterprise approach to risk management that focuses on credit risk, market risk, and operational risk.

Headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, RMA has 1,600 institutional members that include banks of all sizes as well as nonbank financial institutions. They are represented in the Association by 31,000 individuals located throughout North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia/Pacific.

About the Chapter

The Manitoba Chapter, like all RMA chapters, is organized and run by volunteer members. We strongly encourage current or prospective members to become involved in shaping the future direction of the chapter by contacting any of the current officers or committee chairs.         Loren Remillard, President & CEO, The Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce

        Since becoming President & CEO in July 2016, Loren has spearheaded The Winnipeg Chamber’s growth into Manitoba’s largest and most diverse business organization. Year after year, independent surveys of business executives rank The Winnipeg Chamber as the province’s leading business organization for value, results, and impact.

        In 2022, The Chamber of Commerce Executives of Canada named Loren the national Executive of the Year in recognition of his leadership and contributions to the local business community, in particular through the COVID-19 pandemic.

        Loren currently Chairs both the Chambers of Commerce Insurance Corporation of Canada Board and the Canadian Global Cities Council. He serves as a Director of the World Trade Centre Winnipeg, and member of the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre’s Board of Trustees and Executive Committee.

        He has previously served as President of the Chamber of Commerce Executives of Canada, Co-Chair of Immigration Partnership Winnipeg, and on the Board of Directors for the YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg and the Island Lakes Residents Group.

        Loren holds a Master of Arts (Political Studies) and Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) from the University of Manitoba and a Certificate in Public Participation from the International Association for Public Participation. Upon graduation from post-secondary, Loren worked primarily in non-for-profit association management, as well as a decade within the federal public service.

        He and his spouse Nancy have been married 29 years and have two adult sons. When not in the office, you can find them enjoying cottage life in the Interlake or hiking throughout Manitoba.

        Economic Trends & Insights

        RMA Manitoba is very excited to invite you to our March 19th breakfast Session – Economic Update.

        This is a critical juncture for the economy, with many sectors still grappling with U.S. tariffs and interest rates having fallen further amid sluggish growth, while inflation remains somewhat sticky. In addition, Ottawa is attempting to rapidly reorient the economy by strengthening internal trade, finding new markets, and spending much more heavily on defence and infrastructure. Meantime, the U.S. economy has remained surprisingly resilient, and financial markets have been strong. What does this mean for the Canadian dollar, housing, and domestic markets and prices? Douglas Porter, Chief Economist of BMO Financial Group, will address these and other issues in his outlook.

        Douglas Porter, CFA, Chief Economist of BMO Financial Group

        Douglas Porter has over 30 years of experience analyzing global economies and financial markets. As Chief Economist at BMO Financial Group and author of the popular Talking Points, he oversees the macroeconomic and financial market forecasts and co-writes the firm’s weekly flagship publication, Focus. Mr. Porter manages the team that has won numerous forecasting awards. Most recently, Douglas led the team to a #1 ranking for Top U.S. Forecaster among 60 global firms in the 2023 Focus Economics Survey, and #1 for Top Canadian Inflation Forecaster among 28 firms. Also, his team took the #1 spot in the StarMine Awards for Most Accurate Forecasters for Canada in 2022.

        As a respected commentator on economic and financial trends, he is regularly quoted in the national press and often interviewed on radio and television.

        Douglas’ career began at the Bank of Canada; then, before joining BMO, he held the positions of Economist and Country Risk Analyst with other Canadian financial institutions.

        He has been a member of C.D. Howe’s Monetary Policy Council since 2008 and serves on the Investment Management Committees of the Bank of Montreal’s Canada Pension Plan and Western’s Endowment Fund.

        Douglas Porter, CFA, earned a Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Western Ontario.
