Computers Provide Faulty Editing and Proofreading
Microsoft
Word can be set to perform spelling and grammar checks. Use these for
the first editing/proofing pass, but remember: It won’t replace general
editing or proofreading.
Microsoft Word will NOT flag a word that
is spelled correctly, but used in the wrong context. The use of one
correctly-spelled wrong word—e.g., transit for transmit; there for
they’re—can change the meaning of the sentence or can make the sentence
meaningless.
Additionally, some of the grammar rules in
Microsoft Word are incorrect. Others are contrary to RMA style. Be
selective and don’t accept every Microsoft Word grammar and style
suggestion.
Here's a satirical example of a spellchecked poem circulating the Internet.
Eye halve a spell chequer
It came with my pea sea
It plainly marques four my revue
Miss steaks eye kin knot sea.
Eye strike a key and type a word
And weight four it two say
Weather eye am wrong oar write
It shows me strait a weigh.
As soon as a mist ache is maid
It nose bee fore two long
And eye can put the error rite
Its rare lea ever wrong.
Eye have run this poem threw it
I am shore your pleased two no
Its letter perfect awl the weigh
My chequer tolled me sew.
