Using Type for Emphasis

Use italics for emphasis, not bold (generally speaking).  

Don’t use quotation marks for emphasis; it can suggest insincerity, sarcasm, or irony. 


On Web pages, do not underline text for emphasis; this will make it look like a link.


Don’t use a combination of bold, underline, or italics. One will do.


Italicize foreign words, but not Latin terms like quid pro quo, de novo, etc.
