Greetings & Closings

Formal Messages


The salutation/greeting in formal messages is always capitalized—like a heading—and is followed by a colon.
Examples:
Dear Sir:
Dear Friends:
Dear Mr. Peters:

Note:  Personalize the greeting whenever possible.

The
closing is always capitalized and followed by a comma.
Examples:
Sincerely,
Very Truly Yours,

Casual Messages


The salutation/greeting in casual messages only capitalizes the first word and is followed by a comma.
Examples:
Hello, friends,
Hi, members,
Hi, Brian, (Note that proper nouns are capitalized.)

Note:  Personalize the greeting whenever possible even in casual correspondence.

The
closing uses sentence case.
Examples

See you there!
